October12, 2003

The Pacific Gateway Treasures, a coalition of museums, historical sites and historical organizations from the L.A. Harbor area, was formed to promote our rich history. On October 12 a day long event was held with booths and displays presented by 17 different museums and historical groups. Participants dressed in period costumes which ranged all the way from a Spanish Conquistador to 1940 styles. The afternoon was filled with entertainment by various groups and a fashion show of the beautiful costumes. A grand day for everyone!

Without a doubt Bill Kurka dressed in complete Chinese heavy gear stole the show. The crowd gasped as he "gracefully" stepped up onto the stage with the help of his tenders, Kevin Monahan and Charlie Orr. When he tipped his 18 lb. boot up onto the toe in true "Fashion Show" style, the crowd broke into a loud round of applause and laughter.

The ladies from the Banning Residence Museum and the Drum Barracks Museum in Wilmington dressed in elegant styles of the 1880s

A lovely Japanese lady dressed in traditional Japanese costume preformed a slow and graceful dance for the audience.

Charlie Chaplin strolled around the grounds twilling his cane and tipping his hat to the ladies, while a searfaring man strummed his banjo and sang songs of the sea.
