HDSUSA Rally 2000 - Santa Barbara
September 30 & October 1, 2000

On September 30, the HDSUSA Rally 2000 was held at the Santa Barbara City College with the morning filled with presentations by Dr. Hugh Greer, Skip Dunham, John Broadwater, and Dr. Phil Nuytten and hosted by Leslie Leaney of the HDS. At noon, everyone moved to the Marine Tech Department for lunch followed by demonstrations of the diving bell, recompression chamber and underwater task performed by the SBCC students.

The following day, CCED members joined the Central Coast WEG at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum where they dove a Japanese abalone helmet owned by Bob Kirby. It was a great weekend and we want to express our thanks to Leslie Leaney and the CCWEG for inviting our group to participate

Air was furnished by muscle, sweat and Bob's hand cranked air pump. Charlie Orr and CCWEG member provide the muscle and sweat, while Jim Pride stands on the pump base to add ballast.

CCED members listen intently as Bob Kirby discusses his modifications to a Chinese helmet. Well, at least Jocko Robinson, Mark Howell and Brad Speer were listening. Charlie Orr and Jim Pride were listening just like they did in high school!

The helmet is added after diver walks out to the water. Eva is joined by Jocko Robinson as they assist Brad before he enters the water.

Mark Howell, assisted by tenders Charlie Orr, Duke Drake and Scrap Lundy.

Eva Trusty stops on steps of the Santa Barbara Museum
as she begins the long walk out to the dock to make her dive.

Jim Pride dresses in and then waves to the crowd after his dive.

Graham Weir (left) from Australia was first diver in the water and
Scrap Lundy (right) was the last diver for the day.

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum has a large display of helmets. Many of them donated or on loan by Bob Kirby. This display alone is worth a stop in Santa Barbara.
